What is Sports Dentistry

The mission of sports dentistry is the simple treatment and prevention of sports injuries to the mouth and face and other oral cavity-related diseases. In sports and health, the biggest challenge is maximizing the benefits of real participation while reducing the risk of injury.

Current estimates indicate that more than $20.4 million has been spent on preventing sports-related mouth/face injuries. This is a serious problem for national health care. Prevention is key. Educating athletes about basic or oral care, as well as proper use of safety equipment and playing games safely is very important.

Sports dentistry has a strong focus on prevention, and much of it is done through regular screening and examinations. These visits allow the dentist to assess the athlete's overall oral health. Dentists look for signs of decay, gum disease, temporomandibular joint disease, conditions for previous restorative procedures, and more.

Due to the high risk of stroke injury that is common in sports, it is important to keep the athlete's teeth healthy. The dentist will also look for common signs of eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. This disorder is very common in young athletes and leaves a distinct erosional pattern on the tooth surface.

It is necessary for athletes to take very good care of their teeth. They need to learn proper oral hygiene and have regular cleanings. They need proper-fitting mouth guards and not the one size fits all kind that are leading to thousands of sports-related injuries every single year.
